Want.

I am in immediate need of two things:

1. A ruffle foot for my sewing machine
2. A girl baby

Why? Three words: Ruffle Butt Onsies!!!
I found this tutorial over at U create, it's a guest post from Crap I've Made (the photo is hers too!)

Aren't you in love with that onsie? And that chubby legged baby?! I am, and I'm crossing my fingers that the fetus my SIL is growing is a girl! (and yes, I just texted my SIL to see if she knew what it was yet. She doesn't. poo)

Still. I foresee many of these in my future. I just need to find some babies to put them on!

If you're in need for some crafty inspiration, check out U create and Crap I've Made . They are both beautiful blogs with tons of great ideas!

10 minute cookies

I'm not a gourmet cook, baker or eater. I don't make my own cheese and I've never had arugula. I eat what I like, and what I like is easy. Sometimes I debate (with myself) whether or not my recipes (like this one) are worthy of sharing with the blogosphere, and then I had an epiphany.

Sometimes, a girl just wants a cookie...NOW.

And a cookie you shall get! These take approximately three minutes to whip up from a box cake mix, and only 7 minutes to cook. Perfect for whipping up during the commercial break on Hulu on a lazy Sunday afternoon!

10 minute cookies

1 boxed cake mix (any flavor!)
1/3 c. oil
2 eggs

Mix all three (!!!) ingredients together. Roll into balls and roll in powdered sugar. Bake at 350 for 7-9 minutes. Eat all of them in one sitting.

Some of my favorite variations: Lemon cake mix with 2 tbs lemon zest mixed in. Chocolate cake mix with 1/2 c. nuts mixed in (pictured). Spice cake mix rolled in cinnamon and sugar.

Enjoy! And the fact these come from a box mix will be our little secret ;)

crochet hat

For Christmas I made my two year old nephew a crochet hat, but unfortunately I wasn't able to get a picture of it (so maybe I finished it in the car on the way to our Christmas celebration, I never said I was organized! :)
Yesterday my sister texted me this picture:

How stinkin' cute is that! I love his cheesy fake smile. Oh, and the hats cute too :)

I can't believe it's February already! This year is going to FLY by!

The D word

It's true. And it's sad. Yep, I'm on a DIET, hence the lack of food related (or any, really) blog posts. I do have a bunch of posts I've been working on, but am waiting to find my camera cord to post (a bunch to me=3.)

In the meantime, while I eat this bran muffin, indulge your sweet tooth on this blog:

Tartlette

She makes the most beautiful cookies! Some version of macaron will be on my to-make list as soon as I shake this holiday weight ;)

Enjoy!

Muthtard!

I have a fabulous friend who is in lurve with the color mustard. So I decided to make her a mustard colored scarf!
It's still a work in progress, but here is a sneak peek at it's mustardy fabulousness

My friends mom is a knitter (I only crochet), and hearing that I was making M a scarf, she decided to make me one! I am in love with this scarf, and pretty jealous of her skills! It's absolutely perfect and soo soft. I plan to wear it often.

Chicken Provolone Roll Ups

I don't think I've mentioned much about my new favorite site, Tasty Kitchen. It's Pioneer Woman's version of allrecipes.com (my previous favorite recipe site). Right now I prefer tasty kitchen because I'm not asked to become a paying member every time I search for a recipe. Sorry, allrecipes, but it gets annoying.

Anyways, I found this recipe for Chicken Provolone Roll Ups and decided to try it for it company. I have to say, it's amazing! It didn't turn out so pretty, so I was glad that our company cancelled (is that bad? I think it's bad.) but boy howdy is it delicious, and so easy!

Ingredients

  • 4 pieces Chicken Breast, Pounded Thin
  • 8 slices Provolone Cheese
  • 8 Tablespoons Seasoned Bread Crumbs
  • 8 teaspoons Parmesan Cheese, Grated
  • 1 bottle (8 Oz. Bottle) Italian Dressing

Preparation Instructions

Mix bread crumbs and Parmesan cheese together. Set aside. Put 2 slices of provolone cheese on each chicken breast. Roll breasts up jelly roll fashion; dip each in dressing, then in the bread crumb mixture. Place in a Pyrex dish sprayed with non-stick spray. If necessary, to keep the chicken from unrolling, place a toothpick in each chicken breast. Bake at 450 degrees F for 25 minutes.

Bacon Jalapeno Bites

I created this recipe for a New Years dinner appetizer by altering Pioneer Woman's Jalapeno bacon thingies. It's very easy, but very tasty!

12 Jalapenos
8 oz cream cheese, softened
1/2 Cup Mozzarella cheese, finely shredded
1/2 Cup provolone cheese, finely shredded
1 lb bacon, cut into thirds
1/2 teas onion powder
1/4 teas salt

Wash and halve Jalapenos, removed seeds and membrane. Dry on towel. Mix Cheeses and seasoning until well blended. Fill each Jalapeno half with cheese mixture. Wrap with a bacon strip and secure with a toothpick. (try to make them prettier than mine, I was experimenting to see which way the bacon worked best. Turned out to be when it was wrapped around the entire pepper and secured with toothpick!) Bake at 350 for 30 minutes, or until bacon is browned and cheese is browned and bubbly. Drain on paper towels for a few minutes before serving.

Happy New Year!

Handmade Christmas update

Christmas with my family doesn't happen until New years day, but I thought I would share my progress with my handmade gifts for the nieces and nephews.

For the two pre-teens and one five year old niece I made Organza flowers following this tutorial on Reesedixon.com I am so pleased with how they came out. The best part is that I had all of the components on hand. The organza came from my fabric stash, and the seed beads from an old bracelet that I had taken apart years ago.
Then, I glued them to some inexpensive satin headbands that I purchased. And here is the final result:

I adore them! I hope my nieces love them as much as I do.

Next, for my nephew and 13 year old niece (who would never wear a flowery headband!), I made these duct tape wallets. I had one of these (that I bought! How silly) when I was younger, and I remember how cool I thought I was, so I thought that they would like them.
Even the bug detail is tape. I used a scrapbooking punch to make the cutouts, and used to voids along the bottom. I'm thrilled with how they turned out!

So, I have one gift left to complete. 2 year old PJ's crochet hat. Yes, I'm crocheting again! after a two year hiatus, it only took me a few minutes to get back into the rhythm, and I've already completed one scarf and most of his little hat.

Peanut Butter Balls (Buckeyes)

(Far Right in photo)

These have been on my Christmas rotation since I was kid. Easy and delicious!

2 Cups powdered sugar
1 cup peanut butter
1 (12 oz) package chocolate chips
1/2 cup butter, softened (but not runny)
3/4 cup graham cracker crumbs

Combine all ingredients except for chocolate. Mix until well blended. Roll into small balls. Stick toothpicks in balls, then refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
Melt chocolate chips on double broiler. Dip peanut butter balls in chocolate. remove toothpicks and store in a cool place.

(refrigerating the balls with the toothpick inside is a little tip to make dipping easier. the toothpicks stay in much better!)

Spritz Cookies

I've always been fascinated by Spritz cookies, I didn't know that they were made from a press until a few years ago. I thought it was some cookie mould that would be very time consuming...

Anyways, the Wilton press was on sale at JoAnn's last week, and I couldn't resist. I love these cookies! I can't wait to try out new variations (I saw one where a spritz was pressed on top of a round cookie-so cute!)

Basic Spritz Cookies
1 1/2 cups butter
1 cup granulated sugar
1 egg
2 tbs milk
1 teas vanilla
1/2 teas almond extract
3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teas baking powder
Also, the cookies pictured are my "seconds". I'd already packaged up the "firsts" to give to friends and coworkers. The cookie press is definitely worth the $6 I paid for it! :)

Russian Tea Cookies (Snowballs)

I've had these every Christmas as far back as I can remember. This recipe comes from my Grandmother, and it could not be easier (or more delicious). Now, I use margarine for these, because that's what her recipe says. Don't hate the margarine cookies, they really are awesome!

Sift together 2 cups flour, 1/4 cup sugar and 1/2 teas salt. Then add 1 cup soft margarine (not runny!) and 2 teas vanilla. Blend with pastry cutter. add in 1 cup finely chopped pecans. Roll into balls. Bake at 325 for 25 minutes.

Remove and cool for 5 minutes, then roll in powdered sugar. They keep really well if you store them in an airtight container with powdered sugar.

20 Minute tree skirt

Last week, in a rush to find something to hide the ugly base of my fake Christmas tree, I bought this "drape" from the dollar store. It was okay, but just looked like fabric wrapped around the base of my falsey.
But yesterday I saw this tree skirt on the blog Shanty2Chic. How Cute is that?! I love it.
So, after my movie was over last night it was still to early to go to bed, so I decided to use my dollar store drape to make a ruffle tree skirt.
The result: (click to enlarge)
Not bad! It only took 20 minutes, and I didn't use a pattern (not like I had invested a ton of money into it!)
Also, at first I was jealous of the ruffle foot on Shanty2Chic's sewing machine, but as I was sewing in a very loose top stitch on the ruffle (to pull to make the ruffle) somehow my machine began pulling it and created the ruffle! I was probably way more excited about that than I should be. And, by some twist of fate, the ruffle was the perfect size.
This will probably be a one year tree skirt, as next year we're hosting Christmas for my family, so I plan on getting a giant real tree, which will need a bigger better skirt. This was great practice though, and I'm really happy with it!

Dead Air

I know it's been a little quiet around here. I haven't been spending much time in my kitchen but I'm sure I'll be back in there soon, especially with my annual candy making day coming up this weekend!
I promise to have new and exciting posts up soon.

Quilling

Quilling or paper filigree is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs. The paper is wound around a quill to create a basic coil shape. The paper is then glued at the tip and the coil shaped, these shaped coils are arranged to form flowers, leaves, and various ornamental patterns similar to ironwork.

I want to do it. Why?

Check out this tutorial, and the finished product:

Reese Dixon Quilled snowflake ornament.

Is that not absolutely gorgeous?! I think I'll try my hand at these for next year. I'd love to have some on my tree this year, but with my busy schedule the next few weekends, I just don't see it happening. As someone who hates the commercialized red and green Christmas and all things tacky that come with it, I'm excited to put some of her gorgeous ideas to work on my tree.

Be sure to check out other crafts at ReeseDixon.com , she's amazing and totally inspiring.

Broccoli Beef

This is from Pioneer Womans Broccoli Beef post a few weeks ago. Amazingly easy and delicious! Head over to her blog for the recipe, it's definitely worth a try.
